About the GST Calculator

Goods and Services Tax (GST) is India's unified indirect tax that replaced the earlier multi-layered tax system of VAT, Service Tax, Excise Duty, and others. Introduced on 1 July 2017, GST is levied at every stage of the supply chain, with Input Tax Credit (ITC) available to set off the tax paid on purchases against the tax collected on sales. This free GST calculator handles all standard slabs — 5%, 12%, 18%, and 28% — and includes GST 2.0 updates (the 12% slab has been eliminated for most goods).

The calculator covers four common use cases: adding GST to a base price, extracting GST from an inclusive price, computing a full invoice with CGST/SGST/IGST breakdown, and comparing the Regular GST scheme against the Composition Scheme. All calculations are instant and client-side — no data is sent to any server.

GST Slabs at a Glance

🟡 5% — Basic

⚖️ Composition Scheme

Businesses with turnover up to ₹1.5 Cr (₹75 L for services) can opt to pay a flat rate of 1–6% on turnover with minimal compliance.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate GST on a price exclusive of GST?

Multiply the base price by the GST rate percentage. For example, for a ₹1,000 product at 18%: GST = ₹1,000 × 18% = ₹180. Total price = ₹1,180. For intra-state supply this splits into CGST ₹90 + SGST ₹90.

How do I reverse-calculate GST from an inclusive price?

Divide the inclusive price by (1 + rate/100) to get the base price, then subtract to find the GST. For ₹1,180 inclusive at 18%: Base = ₹1,180 / 1.18 = ₹1,000. GST = ₹1,180 − ₹1,000 = ₹180.

What is the difference between CGST, SGST, and IGST?

For intra-state transactions (buyer and seller in the same state): GST is split equally into CGST (Central GST) and SGST (State GST), each at half the applicable rate. For inter-state transactions: the full GST rate applies as a single IGST (Integrated GST) collected by the Centre and later apportioned to the destination state.

Who should opt for the Composition Scheme?

Small businesses with annual turnover up to ₹1.5 crore (₹75 lakh for service providers) that primarily sell within their state, have limited input purchases, and want to reduce GST compliance burden. Composition dealers pay a flat rate (1% for traders/manufacturers, 5% for restaurants, 6% for service providers) on turnover but cannot claim Input Tax Credit and cannot issue a tax invoice.

What GST rate applies to software and IT services?

Software products and IT services (SaaS, consulting, development) generally attract 18% GST. This applies to both licensed software packages and service-based IT work. Export of IT services to clients outside India is zero-rated (0% GST) and eligible for LUT/bond without payment of tax.

Complete guide to GST calculation in India

GST (Goods and Services Tax) replaced India's fragmented indirect tax system in July 2017, unifying over a dozen central and state levies into a single destination-based tax. Every registered business must collect GST from buyers, file returns, and remit the tax to the government. Getting the numbers right matters for compliance, pricing, and cash flow.

Braxik's GST calculator covers the full workflow: forward calculation (adding GST on top of a base price), reverse calculation (extracting GST already baked into an inclusive price), CGST and SGST split for intra-state supplies, IGST for inter-state and import transactions, cess on demerit goods, and a full invoice builder that generates itemised tax breakdowns across multiple line items.

The tool also includes an editable rate panel so you can customise the GST percentage for any product — useful when rates change or when a product has a notified special rate that differs from the standard slab. A quick-pick library of common items (smartphones, two-wheelers, restaurants, gold, and more) lets you select a product and see the correct rate pre-filled immediately.

The Composition Scheme analyser helps small businesses under the QRMP or composition scheme understand whether they are eligible and what their effective tax burden looks like compared to regular GST registration.

How it works

Forward GST calculation starts from the taxable value (also called the base or ex-GST price). The GST amount is computed as taxable value multiplied by the applicable rate divided by 100. For intra-state supplies, this amount is split equally into CGST (Central GST) and SGST (State GST), each at half the total rate. For inter-state supplies, the full GST amount is charged as a single IGST levy. Cess, where applicable, is added on top of the post-GST price.

Reverse GST calculation extracts the tax from an inclusive (GST-included) price. The formula is: GST Amount = Inclusive Price × Rate / (100 + Rate). The taxable value is the inclusive price minus the GST amount. This is the calculation used when you receive a GST-inclusive invoice and need to separate the base amount for accounting entries.

The invoice builder accumulates multiple line items, each with its own HSN code, quantity, unit, rate, GST percentage, and optional cess. It computes taxable value per line, CGST and SGST or IGST per line, cess per line, and then aggregates all totals including grand total, total tax collected, and round-off. The output can be copied as plain text for pasting into your invoicing or accounting software.

GST rates in the chip panel are editable — double-click any chip or use the pencil icon to change the rate value. This is useful when Parliament notifies a rate change between government cycles. Custom rates typed in the invoice builder's GST column can also be saved to the chip panel for reuse across other line items.

Common uses

  • Calculate the final customer price when quoting a product or service including GST at 5%, 12%, 18%, or 28%.
  • Reverse-calculate the base price and tax amount from a GST-inclusive invoice you received from a vendor.
  • Build a multi-item invoice with mixed GST rates and get a complete tax summary for CGST, SGST, and cess.
  • Verify HSN code tax rates before classifying a product or service in your GSTR-1 return.
  • Understand whether your annual turnover qualifies for the GST Composition Scheme and what the effective tax rate difference is.
  • Check the IGST amount on an import transaction or inter-state supply before raising a purchase order.
  • Quickly update GST rates across your product catalogue when the GST Council announces rate revisions.
  • Split a restaurant bill's GST into CGST and SGST for expense reimbursement entries.

Before you rely on the result

  • Verify that the GSTIN of your supplier is active and matches the legal name on the invoice before claiming input tax credit.
  • Confirm whether the supply is intra-state (same state for both supplier and recipient) or inter-state before applying CGST/SGST or IGST — charging the wrong tax type invalidates the invoice.
  • For goods attracting cess (tobacco, coal, aerated drinks, luxury vehicles), always add the cess on top of the GST amount, not on the base price directly.
  • Reverse calculation results are estimates — always reconcile against the original invoice issued by the supplier, especially for partially rounded inclusive prices.
  • The Composition Scheme has turnover thresholds and category restrictions — manufacturers, service providers (other than restaurant), and businesses with inter-state supply are generally not eligible.
  • HSN code requirements vary by turnover: businesses above Rs 5 crore must use 6-digit HSN codes; smaller businesses may use 4-digit codes. Verify the current notification for your turnover bracket.
  • GST rates shown in this tool reflect commonly notified rates and may not reflect the most recent GST Council decisions. Always verify against the official CBIC rate schedule before filing returns.
